We invite and encourage your inquiries about your United Way, its service and programs.  The following document answers some of the questions volunteers and contributors commonly have regarding United Way.

 

What are the Vision, Values and Mission of United Way of Wayne County?

Who governs the United Way of Wayne County?
A local 28 member Board of Directors, which creates all policy and has total governance over the activities of the United Way of Wayne County.

What are the benefits of giving to the United Way of Wayne County?

Is our United Way a chapter of a national organization?  What is its relationship with United Way of America?

NO. United Way of Wayne County is not a chapter of a national organization; it is totally local and autonomous.  United Way of America is a national trade association providing technical support, volunteer/staff training market research and many other services to its members.

What is the Community Care Fund?

When you contribute to this fund, your gift benefits the most people through 26 local programs and 13 local Community Partners.  Knowledgeable local volunteers invest your gift in local programs that demonstrate effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery, through program outcome measurements, and address critical human needs.

Can I designate to a specific program or Community Partner funded by United Way or another United Way or another United Way?

Yes.  Your designation to a specific program or Community Partner will be factored into their Community Investment Grant provided by United Way of Wayne County.

How much money of the money is used to improve lives in Wayne County?

United Way is both accountable and efficient.  Based upon our 2006 audit, only 15% of expenses are used for administrative and fundraising costs, allowing 85% of expenses to be put to work in our local community through funded programs and UWWC supportive services.

How do I know my money is being used wisely?

When you support United Way of Wayne County, your money stays here supporting a network of 13 local agencies.  Though a local citizens review process, volunteers review funding requests, conduct site visits, review annual audits, budgets, program and outcomes review.  This volunteer review process is carefully designed to insure that contributed dollars are spent effectively and efficiently.  The Board of Directors of United Way gives final approval to all funding recommendations. 

How can I calculate a ‘fair share’ gift amount?

The amount of your United Way contribution is a personal decision.  Consideration may be given to pledge either 1-hour’s pay per month or .6% (.006) of your annual salary.  Giving a ‘fair share’ gift makes you eligible to enter the Fair Share Challenge sponsored by Goldsboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep.

Why should I give if I never use agency services?

Illness, family problems, mental disorders, natural disasters know no economic boundaries.  You or members of your family, friends or neighbors may not need United Way services now, but may in the future.  It is comforting to know that these services will be available if you need them.  In the meantime, a gift to the United Way is a clear expression of concern for your fellow man through 1 gift. 

Why should I give to United Way when the government takes care of everybody? 

Government programs are largely for three basic needs: food, clothing and shelter.  These benefits may be inadequate for many people in need.  United Way services help people at all levels of society.  United Way programs include disaster relief, character building, senior services and many other programs that government does not fund

My spouse gave, why am I expected to contribute?

Your spouse’s gift may be based solely on his or her income, not on your combined income.

Why do some agencies charge fees? 

It is important to remember that there are many people in Wayne County needing services from United Way supported programs.  One community is unable to raise enough money to completely fund all services for all people.  That’s why those who can afford to pay for all or part of the service are asked to do so.  Your pledge means that no one will be refused just because they can’t afford to pay the full cost. 

Does my contribution support campaign special events? 

No.  These events are sponsored by local organizations that assume this cost as an item over and above their regular contributions.  At some events, such as the Taste of Wayne County kickoff event, admission is charged to offset expenses.
