Alexis de
Tocqueville Society
"When an American asks for
the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have
often seen it afforded spontaneously, and with great good will."
Alexis de Tocqueville
Democracy in America, 1835
In 1831, Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville toured a new
nation, the United States of America. He recorded his experience in Democracy
in America, a book describing this new country and its people. In it
he praised Americans for their willingness to volunteer and to contribute
to causes that help those in need.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is a leadership
giving and recognition program founded in the spirit of cooperation and
goodwill about which Tocqueville wrote. Through one gift of $10,000 or
more to United Way of Wayne County, society members provide support to a
variety of health and human service programs that touch the lives of one
out of every four people in Wayne County.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Wayne County was
founded in 1994 by Dr. Deborah K. Fulbright.

The
Pillars Club
Wayne County is fortunate to have an abundance of
leaders who have recognized that our community is only as strong as its
ability to care for one another. These leaders have established a heritage
of giving generously to support United Way of Wayne County.
In 1990, The Pillars Club was founded with 40 members
and has since grown to 547 individuals. Through their generosity these
individuals have shown their personal commitment to Wayne County.
United Way is proud to recognize and thank them for their generosity.
