Funding Strategy Focus Areas Framework

Based on a survey of community issues, the following 3 priority focus areas have been established by the Board of Directors of United Way of Wayne County. Funding emphasis will be placed on programs within these 3 areas.

Education: The conveyance of academic, technical or practical knowledge to young people or adults in order to enhance their quality of life.

In addressing the area of education, targeted goals are on improving academic achievements including the elimination of high failure and dropout rates in the schools, teaching positive social behaviors and responsible citizenship, encouraging self-sufficiency and employment skills, as well as promoting adult literacy.

Abuse: The physical or mental violation or neglect of an individual.

In addressing the area of domestic abuse, the target is on the support for abused individuals and the restoration of safe living as well as the teaching of proper relationships in families, for spouses, in child care and for the infirm and elderly.

Youth: The developmental period between birth and 18 years when minors need guidance and encouragement.

In addressing the area of youth, the targeted goals are on providing adequate education and health care, supplying ample opportunities for creative and academic expression, encouraging positive social behavior including teen-pregnancy prevention and substance abuse education.
